Tech Journeys at SBCC: Reflections on Google Apps and Cloud Computing
As this semester at SBCC comes to a close, I’ve taken some time to reflect on the role that technology—specifically Google Applications and cloud computing—has played in shaping my academic experience. When I first enrolled in this course, I thought I already knew how to use tools like Google Docs and Gmail. But I quickly realized there was much more to these applications than I had ever explored.
One of the biggest takeaways for me has been understanding the value of cloud computing. The ability to access documents, presentations, and emails from any device, at any time, has made my workflow more efficient and less stressful. No more flash drives or worrying about which version of a document I saved—everything updates in real time and is always available through my Google account.
We explored a variety of Google Apps throughout the semester, but my personal favorite was Google Docs. I enjoyed using it not just for solo assignments, but also for group work. Being able to collaborate with classmates in real time—leaving comments, tracking changes, and editing together—made group projects much smoother. I also liked how Google Tasks and Calendar helped keep me organized and reminded me of upcoming deadlines.
What stood out most about cloud-based apps like these is how they compare to traditional client-based software such as Microsoft Office or Lotus Notes. Unlike client-based tools, Google Apps don’t require installation and can be accessed from any web browser. They're also automatically updated and integrated with one another, which reduces friction between tasks. The seamless integration of Gmail, Google Drive, and other apps has taught me how much more productive I can be when everything is connected.
Overall, my journey through this course has been both eye-opening and empowering. I now feel more confident navigating the digital tools that are essential not only in school but also in the professional world. Learning how to effectively use Google Apps has given me a strong foundation in cloud-based productivity tools, and I look forward to continuing this journey beyond SBCC.
